I have lived and biked here most of my life and it doesn't change. Just be glad you are not biking through MO. My one and last experience cycling there, the drivers were worse to cyclists than the IL drivers (I didn't believe that was possible). So I apologize for every rude driver you encountered in IL. The responsible cyclists here are working to change things and maybe the next time you pass through our state it will be better :) Yes, great welcome from Illinois.
